HELP!! which DSLR for around $1000?

help.
too many to compare.
probably go with nikon or canon.
weight - as in lightness fairly important, but not important enough to choose over a better one.

please help. thx. :)

i used the canon digital rebel for a while, wasnt all that impressed
maybe i had bad lenses?
